In the brief but powerful book of Obadiah, we encounter a stark warning against pride and the consequences that follow. Obadiah 1:10-15 captures God’s sense of justice, especially regarding those who revel in the misfortunes of others and allow pride to blind them to their own shortcomings.
Obadiah 1:10-15: A Brief Look
In these verses, God speaks against Edom, who took advantage of Israel’s downfall. Obadiah warns that boasting and rejoicing in someone else’s calamity ultimately leads to their own demise. “For violence against your brother Jacob, shame shall cover you, and you shall be cut off forever.” This isn’t just a historical account; it’s a crucial lesson for us today.

When we witness someone doing wrong and choose to either stand by silently or, worse, join in their wrongdoing, we are aligning ourselves against God’s principles. Our Heavenly Father does not take this lightly. Participating in or condoning such behavior stems from our pride, a refusal to hold ourselves accountable, or a stark blindness to wisdom.
Just as Edom’s pride led to their condemnation, so too does our pride lead us down a perilous path. Charles Swindoll often reminds us that the nature of our relationship with God is reflected in how we treat others. When we look the other way or engage in gossip, hatred, or any form of injustice, we demonstrate a failure to embody the love and grace that our Creator has extended to us.
So, let us heed the lessons from Obadiah. We must guard our hearts against arrogance and pride, seeking instead humility and compassion. Watching someone do wrong—or being a participant—can only foster a spirit of division and darkness. Let us strive to be lights in this world, holding one another accountable, and encouraging righteousness, so that we may walk in the fullness of God’s grace and purpose.
