Labor Day 2023, like every other Labor Day, has always been a time to sit back, relax, and enjoy the three-day weekend before starting the short week. Regardless of your career, we all enjoy a day off, right?
And as much as we do enjoy this day off, its meaning is deeper than burgers on the grill and relaxing in your camper. Labor Day, observed on the first Monday in September, commemorates the valuable contributions and accomplishments of American workers. Originating from the labor movement of the late 19th century, it officially became a federal holiday in 1894. When we reflect on the the work we all do, there are those who find themselves in the unemployment line.
According to reports, in August, the United States experienced an acceleration in job growth; however, the unemployment rate surged to 3.8%, and wage increases slowed down. These developments indicate a softening in labor market conditions, reinforcing the anticipation that the Federal Reserve will refrain from raising interest rates this month.

So what do we pray for this Labor Day 2023?
This week we want to pray for the following people: The people who have jobs, those who have jobs they don’t like but need them, those who are unemployed, and those who are looking to move up in their career.
We thank you for the blessing of employment, for the opportunity to use our talents and skills to contribute to society and support our families. Your Word in Colossians 3:23 reminds us: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” Lord, we lift up those who have jobs, asking for your guidance and strength as they labor each day. May they find fulfillment and purpose in their work, and may they be a light to their coworkers, reflecting your love and grace.
We also remember those who are in jobs they do not enjoy but are necessary for their livelihoods. Give them endurance, patience, and hope, knowing that through their perseverance, they are providing for their families and fulfilling their responsibilities. Help them find contentment in their current circumstances, as your Word in Philippians 4:11 reminds us: “I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.”
For those who are unemployed, we ask for your provision and comfort. In their uncertainty and searching, grant them peace and opportunities that lead to gainful employment. Psalm 34:17 assures us that “the righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles.” Lord, we also remember those who aspire to advance in their careers. May you guide their steps, open doors of opportunity, and grant them wisdom and favor in their pursuits. Proverbs 16:3 encourages us to “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.”
As we celebrate Labor Day 2023, help us to honor the dignity of work and to be mindful of those who toil in various capacities. May we remember that our ultimate purpose is to glorify you in all that we do. In Jesus’ name, we pray.
Amen.
