We all start out with high hopes for a good weekend—until those plans fall apart. Maybe this weekend was one of those for you. Friday began peacefully but ended in an argument with your husband or wife. Sound familiar? Psalm 94 is where I’m going this weekend for that.
Now picture this: you had something important to do. Then remembered—last minute—that there was an event you both forgot. So, you scramble, put on a brave face, and try to fake it till you make it. Let’s be honest: that only adds pressure. Why? Because you started with goals… and now you’re bracing for a rough weekend that demands endurance just to get through.
When I hit weekends like this, I turn to the book of Psalms. That book has something for every emotional state:
Feeling under attack? There’s a Psalm for that.
Struggling with anxiety or lack of hope? There’s a Psalm for that, too.

Psalm 94:1–19 is a lifeline for weekends like these.
Let’s be honest—sometimes it feels like the bad guys are winning. Psalm 94 doesn’t gloss over that. It opens with a bold plea:
“O Lord, God of vengeance, shine forth!” (v.1)
That’s not whispered—it’s shouted. The psalmist is begging God to show up and set things right.
In verses 1–7, frustration pours out. The wicked flaunt their cruelty, especially toward the vulnerable: widows, orphans, strangers. They act like God’s not paying attention.
“The Lord does not see,” they claim (v.7). But the psalmist isn’t having it.
Verses 8–11 are a divine wake-up call:
You think God doesn’t notice? He made your ears—He hears. He formed your eyes—He sees.
God is never distant. He’s aware of every thought—even the ones we try to bury.
Now the psalmist turns toward the faithful. Verses 12–15 offer this reassurance:
“Blessed is the one you discipline, Lord.” Discipline isn’t punishment—it’s preparation. Justice may feel delayed, but it’s on the move. God’s digging a pit for the wicked and offering rest to the weary.
And then, in verses 16–19, things get personal. The psalmist speaks from lived experience:
“Unless the Lord had given me help, I would soon have dwelt in the silence of death.” Even when anxious thoughts multiply, God’s comfort brings joy—not just relief, but delight.
Verse 19 pulls it all together:
When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.
So here are three truths to carry through your Sunday: 👉 God sees it too. 👉 God will respond. 👉 Peace is coming.
A Prayer for Those Having a Bad Weekend
Lord, I know you’re there. I’ve made mistakes, and some of what I’m facing…I’ve been carrying for a long time. Help me remember that encouragement is never out of reach. Help us all find strength in you.
Sometimes I just want to disappear for a bit—check into a hotel and soak up the silence. But that’s a temporary fix. It won’t heal what needs healing.
Help me see life through your lens: one moment at a time. Each new day may feel hard, but show me how to face it with perspective. Help me trust that something good will grow out of this—the kind of peace and joy that only you can give.
Help me stay present with you. Help me protect the joy you offer daily. Help me help others do the same.
In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
