FORT STEWART, Ga. — A U.S. Army sergeant opened fire Wednesday morning at Fort Stewart, one of the nation’s largest Army installations, wounding five fellow soldiers, officials reported.
The shooter, identified as Sgt. Quornelius Radford, 28, used a personal handgun—not a military-issued firearm inside the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team complex at approximately 10:56 a.m. EDT. Other soldiers subdued him, and he was taken into custody by 11:35 a.m., shortly after the base was locked down at around 11:04 a.m.
All five wounded soldiers received immediate first aid before being transported to Winn Army Community Hospital. Some were later transferred to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah. Three required surgery. Base officials confirmed all victims are in stable condition and expected to recover.
Authorities say there is no ongoing threat to the community. Investigators, including the Army Criminal Investigation Division and the FBI’s Savannah field office, continue to probe the motive. Radford had no prior combat deployments; however, officials are reviewing a previously unknown DUI charge.
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp offered condolences and urged the public to keep the victims and their families in their thoughts and prayers. The White House confirmed President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth were briefed on the incident. This shooting is one of violent incidents at U.S. military bases, raising concerns about security within armed forces facilities.

A Prayer For Fort Stewart
Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You are near, even in the darkest moments. We lift up those wounded by violence today, asking You to bring swift healing, deep comfort, and steadfast peace. Surround them with Your love and presence. Grant strength to families who watch and wait, fear clinging close—remind them You hold them in Your hands.
Lord, we pray for the hearts and minds of responders, investigators, medical staff, and leaders. May they move with wisdom, compassion, and clarity, reflecting Your grace in every action.
If fear, anger, confusion, or shame whisper lies into someone’s soul, speak Your truth—You are the Good Shepherd who restores. Please bring light and bring justice. If hearts are broken, offer redemption. You are For those who harm and those harmed, You are the source of peace.
Holy Spirit, fill every space of chaos with Your quiet assurance. Help communities and individuals anchor in Your promises. Let unity, forgiveness, and care rise up among neighbors, soldiers, friends. May love shine brighter than tragedy.
Thank You for hearing our prayers—not because we are perfect, but because You are faithful. Your mercy meets us where we are. Keep us fixed on You, Lord, as our refuge and strength.
In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
