Finding Faith means seeking God in the middle of fear, frustration, and uncertainty. Today we travel to Psalm 82:3–4 as we pause to reflect on the recent South Deering Assault, inviting the justice of God to strengthen families and bring peace in our streets.
Holding On To Faith When Communities Hurt
When heartbreaking stories appear in our neighborhoods, the emotional weight settles on everyone. Because we care deeply about our families, we feel every incident in personal ways. The South Deering Assault left many people shaken, and understandably so. Although fear rises quickly, God continues to meet us with comfort, truth, and clarity. Since Scripture anchors our hearts, we turn to His word to help us walk through difficult moments with courage.

What Happened and Why It Matters
In the community of South Deering on Chicago’s far south side, a young mother and her nine year old son were attacked Monday afternoon near the 10600 block of South Bensley Avenue. According to multiple reports, a group of children and teens chased them, hurled insults, pinned the mother against a fence, and beat both victims as the child tried to protect her. Since the attack, the family has temporarily relocated for safety while community members demand accountability and stronger protective measures around the school.(Chicago Sun Times)
Although this situation has created tension, it also calls us to press into the justice of God while praying for lasting peace in our streets.
Bible Reading To Consider
Psalm 82:3–4 (NIV)
3 Defend the weak and the fatherless. Uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed. 4 Rescue the weak and the needy. Deliver them from the hand of the wicked.
Turning Scripture Into Action
Because situations like the South Deering Assault grip our emotions, we look for ways to respond with wisdom and compassion. Even though anger rises easily, Scripture guides us toward a balanced response that holds both truth and grace. Psalm 82 reminds us that the justice of God reaches into places where human effort falls short. While we wait for legal processes and community action, we move forward through prayer. And as we continue, we remember that God actively defends the vulnerable.
Furthermore, moments like this highlight the importance of peace in our streets. Since neighborhoods thrive when families feel safe, we intentionally lift up the children, teachers, parents, and leaders who are deeply affected. Additionally, we ask God to bring clarity to anyone who feels lost or overwhelmed after seeing the attack. And because His peace calms tension, we rely on His presence to settle the emotional storms still swirling in the community.

Responding With Steadiness and Compassion
Even though confusion grows after violent moments, we choose a steady response rooted in God’s character. Because He sees every detail, we trust Him to bring justice where needed. And since He calls His people to act with love, we become instruments of healing. As we pray over South Deering, we also pray over our own neighborhoods. With every petition, we speak life over our streets, our schools, and our families.
If you feel heavy after learning about the South Deering Assault, you are not alone. I feel the weight of it too. This is why our communities need prayer, support, and the Gospel more than ever. And with God’s help, we can walk forward with strength and hope.

Prayer For The Victims Of The South Deering Assault
Father, we come before you with honesty and concern. Our hearts are heavy as we think about what happened in South Deering. We lift up this mother and her child, asking you to surround them with protection, recovery, and emotional strength. As they carry the weight of fear, meet them with your calming presence. Remind them that they are never alone.
Lord, we also lift up every parent, neighbor, and student who feels unsettled after this attack. Bring peace in our streets and calm in our communities. Because tension grows quickly during these moments, we ask for your wisdom to move through our neighborhoods with clarity and purpose. Pour out comfort on those who feel afraid. Give courage to leaders who must respond. Guide teachers and staff as they protect the children in their care.
And Lord, bring the justice of God to every part of this situation. Reveal truth, correct what is wrong, and heal what is broken. Touch the hearts of those involved in the attack. Transform lives heading in harmful directions. Interrupt destructive patterns and bring new possibilities filled with hope and restoration.
